 What is mole/lesion removal?

Mole/lesion removal is the treatment of vascular and skin lesions, including moles, birthmarks, and seborrheic keratoses. At Skin Medical Aesthetics, we treat non-cancerous moles and lesions with the ICON laser system and surgical excision. ICON is primarily used to treat flat moles and lesions on the skin, while surgical removal is necessary for raised moles/lesions. When you come in for your consultation at Skin Medical Aesthetics, we will create a treatment plan specifically for you.

How can the ICON laser remove my mole/lesion?

The ICON laser allows us to treat moles and lesions without surgery or other invasive methods. This is an in-office procedure that is usually performed in 45 minutes or less. Depending on the skin condition treated, there is minimal-to-no downtime and only minimal-to-moderate discomfort.

ICON’s laser system emits pulses of light (hundreds of pulses per second) to heat and destroy unwanted cells. The ICON system is equipped with a monitor, which gives us a continuous view of the treatment area. As a result, we can direct the laser for optimal, precise results.

Following treatment, you may experience minor swelling and redness, similar to a mild sunburn. It may take several sessions to achieve ideal results, but we will create a treatment plan for you. ICON can also be used to remove flat dark spots from the skin, such as age spots, dark birthmarks, and freckles.

What is surgical excision?

Surgical excision relies on surgery to remove cells or skin samples from the skin’s surface. During the procedure, Dr. Perronewill use a scalpel to remove your raised mole or lesion. You will be given a local anesthetic to numb the area before the excision takes place. With the excision site numb, you shouldn’t feel any pain or discomfort during the procedure. Afterward, Dr. Perrone may close the wound with stitches. He will also place adhesive bandages over the excision to prevent bleeding.
